Ask a Lawyer In the Library – Wednesday Wrap-Up

On Wednesday, August 23, 2017, the Law Library hosted another successful Ask A Lawyer In The Library program. Thank you, Paul Farmer of Gormley Jarashow Bowman, for volunteering and providing this service to the public.  Eight people took part in the program and were able to speak with the attorney to request assistance with issues such as trusts and estates, guardianship, a claim for damages against a local government, deeds, improper liquidation of assets by a family caregiver, an arbitration appeal, foreclosure and powers of attorney. The next program date at the Law Library is Wednesday, August 30, 2017. In addition, the next evening program will be held in Eastport  the day before on Tuesday, August 29.

It is helpful to prepare for your session with the attorney.  Here are some helpful tips:

  • Write a list of specific questions for the attorney.
  • Bring any paperwork and information related to the case.
  • Organize any paperwork from most recent on the top to oldest at the bottom.
  • Identify all deadlines.
  • Prepare a timeline of the legal issue.

Ask a Lawyer In the Library – Wednesday Wrap-Up

On Wednesday, August 16, 2017 there were three limited legal advice programs offered to the public.  We had the “Ask a Lawyer in the Library” twice: once in the law library from 11:00 to 1:00 and in the evening at the Glen Burnie Regional Library from 4:30 to 6:30. During the law library “Ask a Lawyer in the Library” program, we were able to offer the MVLS remote Foreclosure Clinic.

Jonathan Pasterick of Hillman, Brown and Darrow was able to assist three people with such issues as a reverse mortgage, social security, and personal injury.  At the same time, Amy Hennen, an MVLS attorney, was mvls-logoable to help two clients with foreclosure issues.  Using Google Hangouts and a webcam, she was able to talk to the clients in the law library while reviewing documents scanned by the law library in her Baltimore office.

In the evening, the Ask a Lawyer in the Library” at the Glen Burnie Regional Library started up again after the summer break. Cliff O’Connor and Katelyn Maloney of Holmes and O’Connor with Nickola Sybblis were kept busy assisting CLIFF Katelyn Nickola 2017 0815 people with issues such as  divorce, guardianship, wills, deeds, and even copyright. Once the program ended two more people came in for help before I could leave.  I was able to refer a question about a security deposit to the District Court Self Help Resource Center and the Maryland Courts Self Help Center.  The second question involved a search arrant and I was able to provide the code section cited there.

In The Library program.  Chris Boucher provided legal advice to six people on topics such as employment, health records, home owner association fees, and credit.

The next program date is Wednesday, August 16, 2017.  

Next week is also the 3rd Wednesday of the month which means that the MVLS Brief Limited Advice Foreclosure Clinic will also be held in the law library from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm., the same time as the Ask A Lawyer In The Library program. Participants are encouraged to register for the clinic by calling 410-547-6537, but pre-registration is not required.

Also on the 3rd Wednesday,  The Ask a Lawyer program will be held in the evening at the Glen Burnie Regional Library.

Ask a Lawyer In the Library – Tuesday and Wednesday Wrap-Up

This week we offered the Ask A Lawyer In The Library program in two different locations and at two different times.  On Tuesday evening the program was held at the Eastport-Annapolis Neck Community Library starting at 4:30 p.m.

Carole Brown assisted four people with child custody, divorce, preparation for a juvenile hearing and an insurance question.  Joe Gormley of Gormley Jarashow Bowman was the lawyer on call for the weekly Wednesday program from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 pm.m.  He provided assistance with questions about an unemployment appeal and summary judgment.

Ask a Lawyer In the Library and MVLS Foreclosure Clinic – Wednesday Wrap-Up

Today, Wednesday, July 19, 2017, the Law Library hosted the “Ask A Lawyer In The Library” program and the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS) Remote Foreclosure Clinic. Daniel Mellin of Hillman, Brown & Darrow helped three people with issues such as real estate, a quit claim deed, and a trust. The next program date is Wednesday, July 26, 2017.

Today was also the first remote MVLS Foreclosure Clinic.  A couple came to the library for the “Ask A Lawyer In The Library” program with a foreclosure issue.  We are able to scan their documents and program agreements and email them to Ellyn Riedl, an mvls-logoattorney with MVLS.  The couple was able to talk with Ellyn face-to-face using a webcam with Google Hangouts. Ellyn was able to review their documents and advise. Their first language is Korean so we were able to use the Language Line so that language would not be a barrier to getting the help needed.  The couple was very happy with the attention and help.  The remote access MVLS Brief Legal Advice Foreclosure Clinic will continue on the 3rd Wednesday in the law library from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. More information can be found here: http://aacpll.pbworks.com/w/page/99877141/Foreclosure%20Clinic

Ask a Lawyer In the Library – Wednesday Wrap-Up

On Wednesday, July 12, 2017 the Law Library hosted another successful Ask A Lawyer In The Library program. Chris Boucher was our “Lawyer in the Law Library” and was able to help  one person in person who signed up with a property tax assessment appeal.

After no one else signed up, Chris went back to the office but was on call in case someone did come in.  We were able to set it up for remote assistance when someone came in at 12:30 for help with an IRS tax lien.

Six people took part in the program and were able to speak with the attorney to request assistance with issues such as procedure, employment, discovery, garnishment, and real estate.

PLEASE NOTE: The evening program normally scheduled for the evening on the last Tuesday of the month (6/27) at  the Eastport-Annapolis Neck Community Library is cancelled due to a conflict with the Anne Arundel Bar Association Annual Meeting.

Glen Burnie Regional Library – The Ask a Lawyer in the Library program at the Glen Burnie Regional Library is on hiatus for the summer. The next program date is Wednesday, August 17, 2016, 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., with sign-up at 4:15 p.m.

SIGN-UP IS VIA LOTTERY for all three program locations. Sign-up begins fifteen minutes before the program’s start time on the day of the program. Names are pulled from the lottery to determine time slots. If there are more attendees than available time slots, the lottery will determine who is able to meet with the volunteer attorney.
