Ask a Lawyer In the Library: Wednesday Wrap-up

The Ask A Lawyer In The Library program is a civil, non-family law, self-help program sponsored by The Anne Arundel Bar Association and the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service.  Every Wednesday, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., you can talk with a volunteer attorney for up to 20 minutes.  No appointment is necessary, but sign-up is required at the law library’s information desk.  Sign-up begins at 10:45 a.m., and time slots are determined by a lottery. On Wednesday, November 12, 2014,  the Law Library hosted another successful Ask A Lawyer In The Library program.  Thank you, Mike Valadez, for volunteering and providing this service to the public. Four people took part in the program and were able to speak with the attorney to request assistance with issues such as insurance, property, taxes and procedural issues.  The next program date is Wednesday, November 19, 2014.

It is helpful to prepare for your session with the attorney.  Here are some helpful tips:

  • Write a list of specific questions for the attorney.
  • Bring any paperwork and information related to the case.
  • Organize any paperwork from most recent on the top to oldest at the bottom.
  • Identify all deadlines.
  • Prepare a timeline of the legal issue.

On Wednesday, November 5, 2014,  the Law Library hosted another successful Ask A Lawyer In The Library program.  Thank you, Mike Ragland and Jack Paltell, of Bell, Ragland, Gauges & Paltell, for volunteering and providing this service to the public. Four people took part in the program and were able to speak with the attorney to request assistance with issues such as a real estate contract dispute, judgment enforcement and rights to state benefits. The next program date is Wednesday, November 12, 2014.

Six people took part in the program and were able to speak with the attorney to request assistance with issues such as judgment and attorneys fees collection, employment, civil procedure and real estate.  The next program date is Wednesday, November 5, 2014.

Ask a Lawyer in the Library in the Blogosphere

The Ask A Lawyer In The Library program is a civil, non-family law, self-help program sponsored by The Anne Arundel Bar Association and the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service.  Program participants can speak with a volunteer attorney for up to 20 minutes.  The Glen Burnie Regional Library hosts the program on every third Wednesday of the month, August through May, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The Law Library hosts the program every Wednesday, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. No appointment is necessary, but sign-up is required, and time slots are determined by a lottery.  More information about the program is available here.

On Wednesday, October 15, 2014, the Law Library hosted another successful Ask A Lawyer In The Library program.  Thank you, Cliff O’Connor and Nickola Sybblis, for volunteering and providing this service to the public.  Six people took part in the program and were able to speak with the attorney to request assistance with issues such as dealing with a writ of summons, landlord/tenant issues and debt issues.  The next program date is Wednesday, October 22, 2014.

Upcoming Pro Bono Events!

GENERIC_CELEBRATION_LOGO_3(1)The 2014 National Pro Bono Celebration this year is October 19th through October 25th. The Law Library is excited to once again be a Celebration Supporter! In honor of the National Pro Bono Celebration, this blog will be featuring posts focusing on pro bono and other free legal services for the entire month of October.  

Here is a very small sampling of some upcoming events in Maryland!

Monday, October 20th:  CLS Family Law Clinic for the Self Represented at the Prince George’s County Courthouse. More information about this clinic as well as other ongoing programs is available at http://www.clspgc.org/WhatWeDo/ProgramsClinics.

Tuesday, October 21st:  Pro Bono Connection at the University of Baltimore School of Law.  The event will provide free expungement training from 2:00 to 5:00 and a Pro Bono Fair and Reception, 5:00 – 7:00, connecting law students and lawyers with pro bono opportunities (includes lite fare, beer and wine).   • Mid-Shore Pro Bono and Legal Logs is hosting a Lunch and Learn which will include updates to the MSPB Judicare and Collaborative Law programs, and a demonstration of Legal Logs.  The luncheon will be held on Friday, October 24,11:30 am – 1:30 pm, at the Washington Street Pub, 20 N. Pro Bono at the Library – Ask A Lawyer In The Library

The 2014 National Pro Bono Celebration this year is October 19th through October 25th. The Law Library is excited to once again be a Celebration Supporter! In honor of the National Pro Bono Celebration, this blog will be featuring posts focusing on pro bono and other free legal services for the entire month of October.  

The Ask A Lawyer In The Library program is a civil, non-family law, self-help program sponsored by the Anne Arundel Bar Association and the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service.  Every Wednesday, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., you can talk with a volunteer attorney for up to 20 minutes.

To date, 121 attorneys have contributed over one thousand hours to meet with over two thousand clients.  Our statistics for recent years are as follows:  in 2013, volunteer attorneys contributed 229 hours to meet with 400 clients;  in 2012, volunteer attorneys contributed 205 hours to meet with 445 clients; and in 2011, volunteer attorneys contributed over 201 hours to meet with 479 clients.  The Law Library would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the volunteer attorneys!  If you are an attorney interested in volunteering with this program, please contact us.  For more information, please see http://circuitcourt.org/legal-help/lawyer-in-the-library, or you can check out our past blog posts about the Ask A Lawyer In The Library program!
